Mass Effect is a science fiction, third person rpg shooter based in the future of humanity. Because of a monumental discovering on the surface of Mars, humanity's tech level jumped two hundred years because of a exploration team unearthing lost alien technology. The tech allowed humanity to build faster and better ships in which they explored more of the milky way, and then found what was called a Mass Relay. A Mass Relay is a large object that propels a ship across the galaxy at amazing speeds. Because of the discovery of the Mass Relay, it opened up many other worlds, some of them actually habitable.

Mass Effect 1 has already been released for some time, and its sequel, Mass Effect 2 is due to be released sometime early next year. Discuss the games planned trilogy in this thread.

Mass Effect 2?  I haven't even played 1 enough to get everything unlocked.

Yup! Dude I've played #1 over and over, and I'm very excited for this new one. The only drawback to the sequel is the weapons are now magazine fed, not infinite.

what?  why go to magazine?  there was a perfectly good reason that they were infinite.  Don't tell me that online shooting matches caused this.

Bump!

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I've just discovered Mass Effect 1!!!

I never knew RPG's could be this fun.  I thought they were all elves and trolls and stuff!  I got a copy pre-owned for a tenner, and I'm quite impressed.  The main reason I wanted to play it is that the trailers for ME2 all look really good, and I didn't want to miss out on back story - and boy, is there a lot of back story!  This is the kind of world building (or galaxy building) I like to see in gaming.

I completely overlooked this thread when it got started because I'd never heard of Mass Effect.  Then today I remembered reading about a Sci-Fi RPG somewhere... which led me here!

BTW. I just became a Spectre... how far along am I? :D

You "just" became a Spectre? Ah well then you have a LONG road ahead of ya. lol Well, not as long is you just go from point to point that's already laid out for you to travel. There's NUMEROUS smaller little side missions you can go on if you choose to explore the star systems the game has.

Oh, and "have fun" watching the cutscene just before the last mission. ;)

:o   That sounds interesting - I wonder if it makes a difference that I'm playing as Loretta Shepard :D

Since then I've played a bit more.  I keep stretching all the dialogue out, and surveying all the star systems.  I'm trying to make it last.

I'm not very good at fighting though.  I panic.

I think I now see where you, Mike, might get some of your inspiration from for your CJ's!

I have a quick gameplay question too :D  How do I get to become capable of opening items where "you don't have the required electrical skil" ? There don't seem to be any hints as to how to do it, so I'm leaving things on planets unopened.  I thought it would be possible to use a squad member to do certain things, hence the variety :(

Oh those, if you cant, you cant. I just forget about em. With each "skill" i guess, you choose when you start, it gives you higher skills then others, like soldier, you have good combat, or engineer you have good tech or something. I was always a soldier lol. The game got fun once I got to a high level and started getting the cool armor suits and rifles, xD I kicked butt! It was sweet....dude i still have that game :| i have an urge to play it now. xD

Yeah like i said above, you get experience points as you play, and in doing so, rasies your characters level. Highler level means different and better armor, weapons and perks. (Theres this Heavy Camo armor you get at a certain point which i LOVE) And dont forget to check your inventory, because you can switch the weapons you have right now, with ones that are more powerful and destroy enemies faster. Youve GOT to get incendiary rounds.

I chose to be a vanguard.  I didn't really know what I was doing.  I just wanted to get started.  I'm up to level 20 and I still can't get any of the cool stuff!  I'm still stuck with only light armour options and don't have training to use an assault rifle, yet I still have to carry one around on my back like an idiot :D

I think there's something going on between Liara and my female version of Shepard :D  Not unusual for the Asari perhaps, but its very broad minded of the developers to allow that to happen.  I wonder if it works the other way.  I wonder if Kaidan still likes John Shepard as much as he seems to like Loretta Shepard :D It seems that in the Mass Effect version of the future the liberals won out against the conservatives, just like in all the good sci-fi.

On the topic of the second game, I don't know what the planned story is but I hope you can transfer your version of Shepard from 1 to 2.  I don't think I could play the game as a different character now.  I get bored of playing games as macho, gung-ho Vin Diesel types!

BUMP!

To your comment, yup you can play as your first Shepard in the second one. :D I did and i beat it! Eleven hours and adrenaline rushes, especially the ending level.

Oh yes, there's a bunch of sexual content in Mass Effect, and I think they only allow lesbianism when it comes to being paired with an Asari, since their mono-gendered and all and can mate with any gender of any species. Convenient huh. :P However I have yet to see a female-female pairing between humans or otherwise.
